Things to Do in Baldwin, Michigan

Lake County, Michigan is one of the few places in the Lower Peninsula where most of the land around you is not somebody's back yard. The Manistee National Forest covers a large share of the county, the Pere Marquette River runs through the middle of it, and the lakes are small, quiet, and mostly closed to fast boats. Baldwin sits at the center of it. If your picture of northern Michigan involves a crowded beach town, this is the other version.

What is there to do in Baldwin and Lake County, Michigan?

Baldwin and Lake County are outdoor destinations first: national forest hiking, river fishing, paddling on small lakes, and a trail network that carries ORVs in the warm months and snowmobiles in the cold ones. The Huron-Manistee National Forests surround the town on most sides, which means trailheads, two-track, and state forest campgrounds instead of ticketed attractions. Lake County is also home to Idlewild, a community with a genuinely significant place in American history. Add the Pere Marquette River and you have the three things people actually drive here for: water, woods, and trails.

What makes the Pere Marquette River worth the drive?

The Pere Marquette is one of the best-known trout and salmon rivers in the Midwest, and it runs right past Baldwin. Anglers come for resident trout through the warmer months and for the salmon that typically push upriver in the fall, which is why September and October weekends in Baldwin book differently than they do in a beach town. The river is also a good paddle. Canoe and kayak sections run for miles through forest with very little development on the banks. Fishing licenses and season rules come from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and they are the authority on what is open when, not us.

Are the lakes in Lake County good for boating?

Mostly no, and that is exactly the point. Lake County's lakes are small and many of them are no-wake, which rules out water skiing and rules in everything quieter. Whalen Lake, where we manage a log cabin, is a good example: it is a quiet no-wake lake, and the cabin stocks two kayaks, a rowboat and a paddle boat rather than anything with a motor. The fishing there is bluegill and perch off the dock, not a tournament bass lake. Leverentz Lake State Forest Campground is the nearest hiking and biking access. If you want a lake you can hear loons on, this county has a lot of them.

What is Idlewild, Michigan?

Idlewild is a resort community in Lake County that, through the first half of the twentieth century, was one of the very few places in the United States where Black families could buy property and vacation freely. At its height it drew performers and visitors from across the country. It is quieter now, and much of what remains is residential, but the history is real and it is worth understanding before you drive through it. It is the most historically significant thing in this county, and most visitors have never heard of it.

When is the best time to visit Baldwin, Michigan?

Fall is the strongest season here, and it runs later than the lakeshore season does. Color typically peaks in the forest in the first half of October, the archery deer season opens October 1 and the firearm season opens November 15 - both fixed dates in Michigan - and the salmon are usually in the river before either. Winter brings snowmobile and ORV traffic to the same trail network. Summer is the quiet season in Lake County, which is the reverse of almost every other market in western Michigan, and it is a real advantage if you want a lake to yourself in July.

Where should you stay in Baldwin and Lake County?

Stay somewhere that puts you on the water or on the trail, because there is no downtown to walk to. Two of our places fit that description.

Hawks Nest on Whalen Lake is an original log cabin directly on the lake in Baldwin, with the kayaks, rowboat and paddle boat mentioned above, a fire pit, and snowmobile trail access from the property itself. Two honest notes: it has central heat and no air conditioning, and there is no washer or dryer, so pack accordingly. Dogs are welcome and need to stay leashed outside - the neighbors have dogs too. Trailer parking for ORVs is available across the street for a fee. Check the listing for current capacity.

A Luther Frame of Mind is a riverfront place on the Muskegon River in Luther with two bedrooms, one bath and room for six, plus two dogs. It has a full kitchen, heat and air conditioning, laundry on site, and ORV and fishing access nearby. It has a wood-burning fireplace but no provided firewood, so bring your own or buy it locally.

Neither has a hot tub. If that is what you are after, our cabins with hot tubs are elsewhere in the portfolio, and if you are coming for the deer seasons, our Michigan hunting base camps post covers the camp logistics in more detail.

Book either one directly at simplelyfestays.com. You get the same house, a real person to call when something goes sideways at 10pm, and no platform between you and us.
