Six of the western Michigan cabins we manage have a hot tub that runs all twelve months: Hart Lake House in Hart, Relaxing River in Big Rapids, Dragon House in White Cloud, Indian Lakes Hideaway in Sparta, Pickerel Lake Waterfront Cottage in Newaygo, and the Mitten Flats complex a block from the beach in Ludington. Every one of those is bookable in January.
That is a smaller list than most search results suggest, and the reason is worth knowing before you book. Fewer than half the homes Simple Lyfe Stays manages have a hot tub at all, and a few of the ones that do sit at properties that close for the winter. A listing photo of steam rising off a deck in the snow does not tell you which of those two things you are looking at.
Which western Michigan cabins have a hot tub open all year?
Hart Lake House - Hart, Oceana County. A six-person Hot Springs tub, a fire pit with Adirondack chairs, and free firewood. Three bedrooms, one bath, sleeps six. Mini-split heat and air with separate controls in every bedroom, which matters more in February than it sounds. Dogs welcome. A walking path leads to Hart Lake and the Pentwater River, though the house itself is not on the water.
Relaxing River - Big Rapids, Mecosta County. A new Hot Springs tub on a covered deck above the Muskegon River, plus a lower deck and a fire pit. Two bedrooms and a sleeper sofa, one bath, sleeps three to six. Single-level and step-free. One of only two houses on a private road, which makes it the quietest setting here. Dogs welcome, two maximum.
Dragon House - White Cloud, Newaygo County. A six-person tub on 2.5 wooded acres, a ten-minute walk from Hardy Dam Pond. Three bedrooms, two baths, sleeps up to eight. Heated bathroom floors, a gas log fireplace, and a pole barn if you are trailering a UTV. Two things to know: there are no pets of any kind, and security cameras cover the driveway and front yard.
Indian Lakes Hideaway - Sparta, Kent County. A recently added hot tub on a private wooded lot, five minutes from downtown Sparta and about twenty-five from Grand Rapids. Three bedrooms, one bath, sleeps three to five, with an air hockey table indoors. The pick when you want a cabin without a two-hour drive. Dogs welcome, two maximum.
Pickerel Lake Waterfront Cottage - Newaygo County. A wood-fired hot tub, which is a genuinely different experience from the other five. Three bedrooms, one bath, sleeps eight. Three kayaks, two paddleboards, a private launch on a quiet channel connecting four lakes, and a ping pong table. Dogs welcome, two maximum, fee per dog.
Mitten Flats House - Ludington, Mason County. One block from the Lake Michigan beach and walking distance to downtown. Four bedrooms, two remodeled baths, sleeps sixteen. The hot tub here is shared with the rest of the complex, not private to the unit - worth saying plainly, because it is the detail listing photos blur. If a private tub is the point, book one of the five above. If beach access is the point, this is the one.
Do hot tubs in Michigan stay open through winter?
Yes. A hot tub is easier to keep running in winter than to shut down and restart, so ours run continuously. Chemistry gets balanced and the filter rinsed every month, all twelve months, and each tub gets a full deep clean four times a year on a March, June, September, December rotation.
What closes in winter is the property. Our two Luxury Wilderness Yurts and the Modern Hidden Gem Tiny House near Sears, in Osceola County, each have a wood-fired hot tub, and all three are closed October through April. The tubs run fine in the cold. The properties are not set up to host in it. That distinction is why a "Michigan hot tub cabin" search so often surfaces something you cannot actually book in January.
What is the difference between a wood-fired and an electric hot tub?
A wood-fired hot tub is heated by burning wood in a firebox, which means you build a fire and wait rather than lift a cover and get in. Plan on a couple of hours. In exchange you get a quieter soak with no pump noise, and at Pickerel Lake the same tub doubles as a cold plunge in summer, when nobody wants 102-degree water in August.
The other five are electric and thermostatically held, so they are ready when you arrive. Want the tub hot within twenty minutes of dropping your bags? Choose electric. If the ritual is part of the appeal, choose the wood-fired one.
Which hot tub cabin fits your trip?
- Traveling with a dog: Hart Lake House, Relaxing River, Indian Lakes Hideaway, or Pickerel Lake. Dragon House takes no pets.
- On the water: Relaxing River on the Muskegon River, or Pickerel Lake with its own launch and boats.
- A larger group: Dragon House sleeps eight; Mitten Flats House sleeps sixteen with a shared tub.
- Closest to Grand Rapids: Indian Lakes Hideaway, about twenty-five minutes out.
What happens if the hot tub is not working when you arrive?
You tell us, and it becomes a same-day problem for our team rather than a next-week one. A hot tub failure at an occupied property is classified as a top-priority emergency in our maintenance system and routes straight to the field tech covering that territory, whatever the hour. That is also why the monthly chemistry visit exists - most of what would otherwise ruin somebody's Saturday gets caught on a Tuesday, before anyone checks in.
We manage all six of these homes directly, so the person answering your message is the same operation that services the tub. Browse the portfolio and book direct - same calendar the big travel sites see, without their fees on top.
