Should You Tell Your Cabin Host It's a Special Occasion?

Yes, and put it in writing when you book. At Simple Lyfe Stays, a reservation that mentions a celebration gets an extra 30-minute on-site check 24 to 48 hours before check-in that an ordinary booking does not get. Nothing about the cabin changes. What changes is that somebody drives out and confirms the equipment works before you arrive rather than after.

We manage 44 doors across Newaygo, Lake, Mason, Oceana, Mecosta, Muskegon and Kent counties, and this is the one thing a guest can do that changes what happens at the property before check-in.

Which words actually trigger the extra check?

Nine of them: anniversary, birthday, celebration, honeymoon, engagement, wedding, milestone, proposal and graduation. Any one of those in a booking note or a pre-arrival message flags the reservation.

Take that list literally. A person reads the notes, so "it's our tenth anniversary" fires the check and "this trip is kind of a big deal for us" does not. Plain words beat hinting.

What does the pre-arrival check actually cover?

It is a technical verification, and field staff run it rather than a cleaner. The hot tub has to be at its set temperature, with a thermometer checked against the display and the jets run for five minutes. The thermostat moves five degrees and air has to reach the vent within 90 seconds, both heating and cooling. The refrigerator reads 37 degrees and the freezer 0, and the door seals get tested by closing them on a dollar bill. Hot water runs 30 seconds at every fixture, with a look underneath each sink. The door code is entered by hand and the lock battery has to be above 30 percent. Then smoke detectors, the breaker panel, and the outdoor and path lighting that matters on an evening arrival.

Two details in there are worth knowing. If you mention you will be working, the WiFi gets a real speed test instead of a glance at the router lights. And a hot tub in its fourth year or later gets its install year written into the check note, because install year is what moves a tub onto the watch list.

Anything that fails becomes a ticket that has to close before you arrive.

What does the check not cover?

Linens, towels, kitchen supplies, decor and staging. Those belong to the turnover clean, and this visit deliberately does not duplicate them. So if the occasion needs something specific, ask for it as its own request rather than assuming the celebration note carries it.

Where should you book a celebration weekend in Ludington?

Mitten Flats House sits one block from the Lake Michigan beach, sleeps 16 across 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths, and has central heat, air conditioning, high-speed WiFi and keypad entry. Its hot tub, gas fire pit and grill are shared community amenities rather than private, and it has no washer or dryer. Dogs are welcome, two maximum.

Coastal Grand Downtown Ludington is also 4 bedrooms and 2 baths sleeping 16, in downtown Ludington.

Either way, write the occasion into the booking. It is the cheapest thing you will do for the trip and the only part of the pre-arrival process you control.
