Our standard is dogs only - not cats, not rabbits, not birds - at every property that accepts animals at all, and roughly eight of our western Michigan homes take no animals of any kind.
That is worth knowing before you book, because a pet-friendly filter on a travel site will not tell you any of it.
Which western Michigan cabins take dogs?
Bourbon St BlueBird Bus - Bitely, Newaygo County. A converted school bus on ten private acres inside the Manistee National Forest, one bedroom, sleeps up to four. The bath house is a separate outdoor structure with a shower, which turns out to be the most useful dog feature we have anywhere: you rinse the mud off outside instead of in a tub. Screened porch, fire pit, gas grill. Two dogs.
Pickerel Lake Waterfront Cottage - Newaygo County. Three bedrooms, one bath, sleeps eight. A private launch onto a quiet channel that connects four lakes, plus three kayaks and two paddleboards, a wood-fired hot tub and a ping pong table indoors. The best pick here for a dog that swims. Two dogs, fee per dog.
Cozy Muskegon Getaway - Muskegon County, close to Pere Marquette Park and downtown. Three bedrooms, one bath, sleeps six. It has the fenced yard, which is the first thing dog owners ask us about and the thing almost no cabin has. There is also a private inground pool, though it runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend only. Two dogs.
Hawks Nest on Whalen Lake - Baldwin, Lake County. An original log cabin on Whalen Lake, a quiet no-wake lake, two bedrooms, sleeps four. One house rule to read before you book: dogs stay leashed outside, because the neighbors have dogs. Two dogs.
Foreman Lake Getaway - Idlewild, Lake County. Two bedrooms, two baths, sleeps six, and one of the most-booked cabins in our portfolio. Two dogs.
How many dogs can you bring?
Two, at nearly every property. Our live listing data shows a two-dog cap on more than thirty of the western Michigan homes we manage. Exactly two properties cap at one dog, and both are in Ludington: James Street, a three-bedroom downtown home built for longer stays, and Coastal Grand, a four-bedroom that sleeps sixteen.
The limit is a real limit, not a suggestion. It comes from the owner of each home, and a third dog is not something we can wave through at check-in.
Is there a pet fee, and what does it cover?
Yes, and it is charged per dog rather than per stay, so two dogs cost twice what one does. The amount is set by each property and appears in your quote before you pay, not after you arrive.
What it pays for is a longer turnover. Pet cleaning at our properties is not a scheduled maintenance item on a calendar - it is per-stay work attached to your specific booking: a deeper carpet clean and a walk of the yard, done between guests. That is a deliberate choice in how we run the portfolio, and it is why the fee follows the dog rather than being baked into everybody's nightly rate.
What does "pet-friendly" actually mean at these cabins?
It means a written standard rather than a checkbox. Every home of ours that takes dogs is set up to the same short list: poop bags stocked at the property, because the honest reason is that people will not clean up after them otherwise. A baby gate near stairs and entryways. A pets-off-furniture house rule. Dogs only, with the number capped.
None of that is glamorous, and all of it exists because we clean these houses ourselves and know exactly which shortcuts cost the next guest their weekend.
Which properties do not take pets?
Roughly eight of our western Michigan homes accept no animals at all, and the ones guests most often ask about are Dragon House in White Cloud, the Charming Victorian near Ferris State University in Big Rapids, both Lake Michigan Castle units near the Silver Lake sand dunes, and the Spring Lake lakefront home in Ottawa County.
