If you've got a student at Ferris State, you already know the drill: move-in weekend, family weekend, hockey games, and eventually a graduation - and every one of those weekends, half the families in Michigan are hunting for a place to sleep in Big Rapids at the same time.

You get a kitchen for the morning-of coffee, a living room where everybody actually fits, laundry for the inevitable "Mom, can I bring some stuff over?" - and you're minutes from campus instead of a town away. For the whole family (or two families): the Victorian
The Charming Victorian Home near FSU is the family-weekend workhorse: a 2,900-square-foot historic Victorian in downtown Big Rapids with 5 bedrooms and 2 baths, sleeping up to 10. Full kitchen with a dishwasher, laundry on site, and a walkable downtown location near the nature trails - you can stroll to dinner instead of circling for parking. Grandparents, siblings, and the student's roommate who somehow always joins for dinner: everyone fits.
One heads-up so nobody's surprised at check-in: the Victorian is not pet-friendly. If the family dog is part of the traveling party, keep reading.
For a quieter parents' trip: Relaxing River
Relaxing River sits right on the Muskegon River at the end of a quiet private road - one of just two houses on it. Two bedrooms plus a pull-out sofa (sleeps up to 6), washer and dryer, a full kitchen, a fire pit, and a brand-new Hot Springs hot tub overlooking the water. It's the version of the FSU trip where you actually relax between campus visits. And yes - this one is dog-friendly (up to 2 dogs, pet fee applies).
There's something to be said for ending a loud game day in a hot tub listening to the river instead of an ice machine down the hall.
For the big group weekend

While you're in town
Big Rapids is easy to underestimate. The Muskegon River runs right through town, the riverwalk makes for a genuinely nice pre-dinner stroll, and the White Pine Trail passes through for anyone who travels with a bike. Downtown has enough coffee and dinner options to fill a family weekend without repeating yourself. Between campus events, you're not stuck in a hotel lobby - you've got a town to poke around and a house to come back to.
Book the big weekends early - really
This is the part locals know: Big Rapids is a small town attached to a Division I school. On move-in weekend, family weekend, and big hockey matchups, lodging in town simply runs out. Check FSU's official calendar for this year's dates, then book your house as soon as you know your weekend - the calendar-math on these homes is first-come, first-served, and October-through-February weekends go faster than people expect.
