Pack for what the cabin does not have. That is the whole trick, and almost nobody does it, because a listing only ever tells you what is there.
We keep a verified amenity file on every home we manage, and each entry ends with a section you will not find on any booking site: what this property does not have. Read across the fifteen year-round cabins currently in that file and two gaps appear at every single one - an EV charger and outdoor games. Not most of them. All fifteen. That is more useful for packing than any amenity list we could hand you.
What should you pack for a Michigan cabin rental?
Pack the optional things, because optional is exactly what tends to be missing. Beach towels, a yard game, firewood, warm layers, and a charging plan if you drive an electric car are the five things our own amenity file says you are most likely to arrive without.
The basics are covered almost everywhere. Bath towels, bed linens, a full kitchen with cookware and dishes, a coffee maker and central heat come with the cabins we run in Newaygo, Lake, Mason, Oceana, Mecosta, Muskegon and Ottawa counties, and all but one of the fifteen also has air conditioning. The gaps sit outdoors and at the edges, and they repeat from door to door:
- Beach towels, separate from the bath towels already in the house
- A yard game - cornhole boards, a ladder-toss set, a football
- Firewood, unless the listing says plainly that it is provided
- Layers, a rain shell, and shoes you do not mind getting wet
- A deck of cards or a game, if a rainy afternoon would sink the trip
- A charging plan for an EV, made before you leave home
Do Michigan cabin rentals have laundry?
Most do, but four of the fifteen year-round cabins in our file have no washer and dryer, and two of those four sit a block from the Lake Michigan beach in downtown Ludington - precisely where a family is most likely to need one.
Mitten Flats House is one of them: four bedrooms, two full baths, sleeps sixteen, one block from the beach. It is a genuinely good beach-week house, and it has no laundry. Worth knowing before you pack for six days with kids and sand.
Two other things about that address are easy to misread from photos. The hot tub, fire pit and grill there are community amenities shared across the complex, not private to your unit, and there are cameras on the property. Neither is a problem, but both are better heard from us than discovered on arrival.
Are beach towels provided at a Michigan cabin?
Usually not, and they are not the same thing as bath towels. Bath towels and bed linens come with the house. Beach towels are yours to bring, and across those fifteen cabins the only two entries that mention beach towels at all are the pair of Lake Michigan Castle units in Shelby - both recording them as not provided.
That pair is exactly where you would assume otherwise. Lake Michigan Castle in Shelby, Oceana County is six bedrooms and seven baths sleeping fifteen, on the Lake Michigan shoreline near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes at Mears. It is the closest large house we manage to both the water and the dunes, and the towels are still yours. Pack the sand toys and a second pair of shoes while you are at it.
Can you charge an electric car at a Michigan cabin?
No. Not at any of the fifteen year-round homes in our verified file - every one of them records an EV charger as a gap. It is the single most consistent absence in the portfolio, more consistent than any amenity is a presence.
So plan the charge around your route rather than around the cabin, and bring the Level 1 cord that came with the car. If a particular house turns out to have an accessible exterior outlet, that cord adds slow range overnight - but treat that as a bonus, not the plan.
What changes about packing after Labor Day?
Water amenities close, and the daily temperature swing gets wider. At Cozy Muskegon Getaway, the private inground pool runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend only. From September through May the same yard is a fenced yard with a fire pit - a good trip, a different trip, and not one to pack swimsuits for.
That house is three bedrooms and one bath sleeping up to six, with a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, and dogs welcome up to two with a fee. It sits close to Pere Marquette Park and downtown Muskegon, which is the cool-weather version of a Lake Michigan trip: the beach is still there, you just walk it in a jacket.
For fall and winter generally: layers rather than one heavy coat, because a sunny October afternoon and the same evening beside a fire pit are two different climates. And check the fireplace line in the listing. Some of our cabins provide firewood, some sell it, and some expect you to arrive with it.
What can you leave at home?
Kitchen equipment. Pots, pans, dishes, utensils and a coffee maker come with the cabins we manage, and hauling your own is wasted trunk space. Leave the bath towels and the bedding too.
Board games are the coin flip. Our file records some of these cabins as stocking them and several others as explicitly having none, which is why a deck of cards is on the list above and a full game closet is not.
