Where Do You Park at a Michigan Cabin Rental?

  • Posted on

At a Michigan cabin rental you park in the driveway, and at most of the properties Simple Lyfe Stays manages the driveway is the only place you are allowed to put a car. That matters more than it sounds, because the number of people a house sleeps and the number of cars it holds are two different numbers, and only one of them appears in the listing title. We manage 44 doors across Mason, Oceana, Newaygo, Lake, Mecosta and Kent counties, from downtown Ludington to the woods outside White Cloud, and parking is the thing guests assume instead of asking more often than anything else.

Where do you park at a Michigan cabin rental?

In the driveway, and usually only in the driveway. Across the per-property guest instructions we store for every door, the parking line almost always names the driveway and then rules out everywhere else. The reason is rarely the house itself. It is the neighbors, the property line, and in the lakeshore towns the city ordinance.

How many cars can you bring to a cabin rental?

Fewer than the house sleeps, and sometimes far fewer. Mitten Flats House in Ludington, Mason County is the clearest case in our portfolio: 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 16. The parking instruction stored on that property record asks guests to use the two designated spots for the house on the west side of the property, and to put any additional vehicles on the road so the other units in the complex keep their own parking. Sixteen guests, two designated spots. If you are booking it for a reunion, carpool on purpose rather than by accident.

That gap between beds and parking spaces is the single most useful thing to know before you book a large house anywhere in western Michigan.

Does a rental listing tell you how many vehicles fit?

Almost never, and the reason is structural. In our own amenity inventory, 17 of 34 property records carry a parking line at all, and nearly every one of those says only "free parking" and nothing more. Exactly one record states an actual number of vehicles. One door's free-text note does name a figure, four vehicles, which mostly underlines how unusual a figure is.

The guest-instruction fields OwnerRez stores per property are no better on this point. Our portfolio uses 19 distinct field codes, covering trash, quiet hours, firewood, dishes, laundry, the grill, the hot tub, summer bugs and more. Not one of them is a parking field. Where a parking rule exists, somebody wrote it by hand into a general note. So the honest answer is that you cannot read vehicle capacity off a listing, and you should ask.

Can you park on the street in Ludington in the winter?

Not between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., November through April. The City of Ludington prohibits on-street parking in those hours during those months so streets can be cleared of snow. Two of our Ludington doors carry that rule word for word in the information we send guests: Coastal Grand, 7 bedrooms and 4 baths, sleeps 14, which has street parking in front and a driveway behind the house, and James Street Retreat, 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, sleeps 6, a few blocks away.

If you are booking a downtown Ludington house between now and spring, that one rule is worth more to you than any amenity list. Ordinances change, so confirm the current hours with the City of Ludington before you rely on them.

Why do so many Michigan cabins say driveway only?

Because the ground past the driveway usually belongs to somebody else. Indian Lakes Hideaway in Sparta, Kent County, 3 bedrooms and 1 bath, tells guests to park in the driveway and specifically not across the road, because across the road is private property. The same note says plainly that the house has no access to Indian Lake and asks guests to stay off the neighbor's land, and it describes how close the property line runs to the house.

Rural parcels in Newaygo, Lake and Oceana counties are often narrow and long, with the lake frontage belonging to a neighbor. A sand two-track that looks like overflow parking is frequently a driveway somebody else maintains. At another of our doors the instruction is about the road rather than the lot: it narrows to one lane, so drive slowly and watch for oncoming traffic.

Where do you put a boat trailer or a snowmobile trailer?

Ask before you tow it, because secure trailer space is the hardest thing to find in a Michigan rental and most driveways cannot take a truck plus a two-place trailer. We wrote about the one door in our portfolio that genuinely solves this in snowmobile-friendly cabins, and about winter access generally in getting to a Michigan cabin in winter.

What should you ask about parking before you book?

Four questions, in this order. How many vehicles fit in the driveway? Is on-street parking allowed, and are there overnight or seasonal restrictions? Is the lot shared with other units? And is there room for a trailer if you are bringing one?

Ask them before you book rather than after, and ask the people who actually manage the property. Booking direct means the person answering is the same operation that wrote the parking note in the first place. Browse our western Michigan cabins and send the question with your dates.
